Regulations

Fire alarm systems are regulated by several regulatory agencies.  National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) outlines codes that are applied nationally.  The California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) oversees all fire systems installed in the State of California, and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) oversees and approves fire alarm system installed locally.  The AHJ is typically the fire marshal for that particular city or county.  

Other regulatory agencies can include Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Factory Mutual (FM),  the Building Inspector,  and your insurance company.  

It is important that you understand and know which of these organizations is going to regulate your particular fire system.  At a minimum it will be the AHJ.
